Limestone Red

What makes Limestone Red interesting is how narrowly it has found its niche. It clearly prefers normal ground to soft or firm conditions, winning 2 of 14 races (14%) when the going is standard rather than at the extremes. It also runs best at distances between one mile three furlongs and one mile four furlongs—winning 2 of 18 races (11%) at those lengths. The problem is that these preferences have not translated into consistent form. It has not won in its last six races, most recently finishing seventh, fifth, third, and second, and its partnership with regular rider Ronan Whelan has yielded no wins from nine attempts together.

Trainer Tracey Collins, based at The Curragh, sends out a modest yard—just four winners this season—which suggests Limestone Red is a modest horse with modest ambitions. At six years old and with only two wins to its name from 33 races, it is unlikely to progress beyond its current level. But the pattern is clear: this is a horse that has learned to win at Dundalk, and it will be worth watching if it returns there soon.
