What makes the form hard to read is the sheer inconsistency of it. A third, then a fourth, suggested a horse finding its feet and perhaps building toward something. Instead, the runs since have gone in completely the wrong direction: seventh, then 14th, then 12th, and most recently 15th. That is a horse going backwards rather than forwards, and at four years old, time is not unlimited. Limbocall raced just one day ago, so the yard — sorry, the team — will be digesting that latest effort right now.
The yard itself is in decent enough form, with 18 winners on the board this season, which at least suggests the problem is specific to this horse rather than a broader slump. M D O'Callaghan is clearly capable of getting horses to win. The question hanging over Limbocall is whether the right race or the right conditions simply haven't been found yet, or whether this is a horse that will continue to make up the numbers. Until there is more to go on, patience looks like the only option — and even that is wearing thin.
