She is trained by Jedd O'Keeffe at his yard in Coverham, North Yorkshire, a small but productive operation that has sent out 18 winners already this season. O'Keeffe is not a trainer who floods the entry lists with horses — he picks his spots carefully — so the fact that his yard is ticking along at that level speaks well of how the team is managed. For a young horse still learning her trade, being in patient, experienced hands matters more than people often realise.

With no wins from three races and her most recent run coming just yesterday, Lillie Margot is very much a work in progress. But the trend is the thing to watch: if she keeps improving at the rate her latest placing suggests, a first win may not be far away.
