Lieutenant Sir

What is interesting is where Lieutenant Sir does his racing. When he steps up to the more competitive Class 5 races, he has yet to trouble the judge, going 0 for 3 in that grade. His one success came in a lower-class contest, which suggests he may have found his level or at least that he needs to be matched carefully to opposition. His recent form has been streaky — a win, then three disappointing runs, before picking up sixth and seventh-place finishes in his last two starts — the kind of inconsistency you expect from a young horse still learning his trade.

He races for trainer Archie Watson's Upper Lambourn yard, which has been firing on all cylinders this season with 62 winners already. Watson has the experience to get the best out of juveniles and three-year-olds, so there is reason to believe Lieutenant Sir could improve as he matures. He raced just yesterday, so he remains an active part of the yard's plans and clearly still has the chance to develop into something useful, even if he has not yet proved it in the tougher company where his future likely lies.
