Pull the focus to distances between a mile and a mile and two furlongs, and Ledger suddenly looks like a different horse. Three wins from 18 races at those trips — winning 1 in every 6 — tells you this is a horse that needs a bit of room to get into its stride. Too short and you're leaving the best of it on the table.

The really striking detail, though, is Hamilton Park. Ledger has won twice from just five visits there, which means it has won 2 in every 5 races at that track. That is an extraordinary ratio for any horse, let alone one whose overall record is modest. Certain horses simply take to certain venues — the cambers, the bends, the ground, something intangible — and Hamilton Park appears to bring out the best in this one. The last win there came in May 2024, now 24 months ago, so the question is whether that affinity still holds.

Recent form is harder to dress up. The last six runs have produced finishing positions of 9, 9, 15, 15, 11, and 11 — consistently midfield or worse, with no obvious improvement. Ledger has not won in any of those six races, and trainer Paul Traynor's yard in Templepatrick has managed just one winner so far this season. It is not a yard currently firing on all cylinders.

The one genuinely bright spot in the partnership column is Oisin Orr. When Orr has been in the saddle — nine races together — Ledger has won three times, a win rate of 33%, or 1 in every 3 rides. That is a remarkable number and almost certainly not a coincidence. All three career wins have come in Class 6 company, the level where Ledger is most at home, and all three at distances that suit. The formula, when everything aligns, clearly works. The challenge right now is that the pieces have not come together for a long time, and at six years old, the window for putting that right is not getting any wider.
