Leading The Way

The recent form makes for tough reading too. In its last six races, the best finish was a fourth, bookended by a string of fifth and seventh places. More striking still is the gap since it last ran — 414 days, well over a year off the track. That kind of absence raises questions. Horses can come back refreshed from a long break, but they can also come back rusty, and at nine years old, Leading The Way isn't getting any younger.

The horse typically competes at Class 5, which is the bread-and-butter level of British racing — the kind of race run at smaller tracks on a Tuesday afternoon, designed for horses that haven't won much. Even at that level, Leading The Way hasn't broken through, going 0 from 8 races in that grade. Jockey Tabitha Worsley has been in the saddle for eight of those career starts and the pair have yet to find the winner's enclosure together.

Trainer Georgie Howell operates out of Tenbury Wells in Worcestershire, a small yard that has sent out just one winner this season. That's a modest return, and it means Leading The Way isn't coming from a yard in red-hot form. Whether a long rest, a change of tactics, or simply the right race on the right day might finally unlock that elusive first win remains to be seen — but after 19 attempts, patience is very much the order of the day.
