The fact that Late Claim's one career win came at Lingfield is worth noting. Lingfield's all-weather track has a very particular rhythm to it — tight turns, a synthetic surface — and some horses simply click with it in a way they never do elsewhere. Whether that December win was a fluke or a sign that Lingfield genuinely suits, the horse hasn't had the chance to prove it either way since.
The level Late Claim typically competes at — Class 5, which is towards the lower end of the racing ladder — has not been kind either. In five races at that level, the horse has yet to win, which tells you it is not yet dominating the tier it is pitched against. For context, Class 5 is where horses go to find races they can be competitive in, so going winless there is a gentle warning sign.
Regular jockey Finlay Bassett has been aboard for six of those attempts together and is still waiting for that first win as a partnership, which is a tough run for both horse and rider. Trainer John Mackie, based in Church Broughton in Derbyshire, has had a productive season with 16 winners from the yard, so the operation clearly knows how to get horses to win — Late Claim just hasn't been one of them yet. With the horse having raced as recently as yesterday, the yard are clearly keeping it busy and looking for the right opportunity. The question is whether Lingfield in winter holds the answer, or whether that December win remains a one-off moment of magic in an otherwise frustrating career.
