Late Claim

The recent form makes for interesting reading. In its last six races, Late Claim has finished second no fewer than four times, with only a sixth and a seventh spoiling an otherwise consistent run of placed efforts. That is a horse who keeps showing up and nearly delivering — the frustrating kind of consistent that keeps the yard hopeful but leaves the race just out of reach. It has not won in four months, and at a win rate of roughly 1 in every 12 races (8%), the victories have been hard to come by.

Distance seems to matter. When Late Claim has raced over a mile and six furlongs to two miles — the longer end of the spectrum — it has won 1 from 8 races at that trip, a win rate of 12%. That is modest in isolation, but it outperforms its record everywhere else, which suggests the stamina test of a longer race suits it better than shorter assignments. Horses often find their best distance gradually, and Late Claim appears to be one that needs time and ground to stretch its legs properly.

The yard behind it is John Mackie's operation, based in Church Broughton in Derbyshire, and it has been in decent form this season with 15 winners sent out. That is a trainer who knows how to place a horse to win, which makes the four-month gap since Late Claim's last victory a puzzle worth watching. The horse last raced eight days ago, so it is clearly being kept busy, and with that pattern of near-misses in recent outings, another crack at a victory does not feel far away. The question is simply whether it can convert one of those seconds into something more.
