Last Note

The recent form makes for familiar reading. Looking at the last six races, the most recent results — a ninth and a twelfth — are not the kind of numbers that inspire confidence, though there are brighter moments buried in there: a second and a third from earlier in that run suggest the ability to compete is there, even if the finishing touch isn't. The horse raced as recently as yesterday, so it is very much an active campaign.

Jack Quinlan has had the ride six times without a win between them, which at this point feels less like bad luck and more like a combination that hasn't clicked. Trainer Cian Collins, based in Navan in County Meath, has had a solid enough season with 20 winners sent out from the yard — so the operation clearly knows how to win races. Last Note just hasn't been the one to provide them. Competing almost exclusively at Class 4, which is a mid-to-lower tier of racing, the horse has gone winless across five races at that level. That matters, because Class 4 is precisely where you would expect a horse to find its opportunity if it has any winning in it.

There is something quietly stubborn about a horse that keeps turning up, keeps placing occasionally, but never breaks through. Last Note is not a disaster — three places from eight races means it hasn't been embarrassing itself — but at six years old, with no win on the board, time is not exactly on its side. The Collins yard will know better than anyone what it would take to get this horse into the winner's enclosure. For now, Last Note remains a horse full of nearly-but-not-quite moments, and racing has plenty of those.
