But there is work to do. In nine races overall, Lady Gormire has won just once and placed five times, giving her a record that reads competently rather than impressively. Her last six runs show inconsistency: a placed effort three weeks ago, a second place before that, then back-to-back runs that went nowhere (a fifth and a thirteenth). She raced as recently as yesterday, so she is clearly in regular work and her trainer Michael Dods — who has already sent out 43 winners from Piercebridge this season — is keeping her busy. Five weeks have passed since her win in August, and that gap suggests the yard is hunting for the right spot rather than chasing every opportunity.

At three years old, Lady Gormire has time to improve and find her level. The signs are there: a preference for the seven-furlong to one-mile distance, a trainer who knows how to win races, and a course where she has already tasted success. What she needs now is consistency and a few more days like 26 August.
