La Cantate

The recent form paints an interesting picture. Finishing second, then fourth, then second again across the last six races suggests a horse that is consistent without quite being decisive. The pair of runner-up finishes, sandwiching a couple of middling efforts, hint at a horse that can raise its game — just not yet all the way to the top. Raced yesterday, La Cantate is as active and current as they come.

At Class 4, which represents solid mid-level racing rather than anything glamorous or bargain-basement, La Cantate has drawn a blank in all four runs at that level. Zero wins from four races at a specific class is the sort of record that raises a quiet question: is this horse simply competing slightly above its natural ceiling, or is it just waiting for the pieces to fall into place? Given the placed efforts elsewhere in the record, the latter is at least possible.

Trainer Robbie Llewellyn, based at Wroughton in Wiltshire, has sent out 14 winners so far this season — a yard clearly in decent working order. When a trainer is getting horses to win regularly, a winless inmate tends to stand out. La Cantate is presumably one that the yard believes in, otherwise it simply would not keep taking up a spot in the racecourse queue. The question is whether belief eventually translates into that elusive first victory.
