Three of those four wins have come in Class 2 races — among the better races in Britain — and that tells you something important. This is not a horse padding its record in weaker company. Trained by K R Burke at Coverham in North Yorkshire, a yard that has sent out an impressive 140 winners this season alone, Korker has consistently been pointed at competitive fields and has occasionally risen to meet them. His most regular partner is jockey Clifford Lee, who has ridden him 21 times and won on him 4 of those — a win rate of around 19%, or almost 1 in every 5 rides together. For context, that is a notably better return than his overall record, suggesting the two have built a real understanding.
The peak of that partnership came in the autumn of 2023. Korker won back-to-back Class 2 races at Beverley and Windsor within a month, and after the Windsor victory Lee was glowing. He described how Korker had finally started jumping from the stalls cleanly — something that had frustrated the team for years — and compared him favourably with Emaraaty Ana, a horse rated 111, who had beaten him narrowly at Ascot shortly before. "He's grown up now," Lee said. It felt like a horse finally fulfilling its potential.
Since then, however, it has gone quiet. Korker has not won in 32 months, and his recent form — finishing sixth, tenth, eighth, and thirteenth in four of his last six races — tells the story of a horse going through a difficult spell. He raced just a day ago and is clearly still being kept busy. Burke has his sights set on the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot, one of the most famous sprint handicaps in the calendar, and has flagged up Jack Nicholls as the likely rider — a young jockey Burke clearly rates and wants to give a big-race opportunity. Korker will need to rediscover his best, but a yard this productive knows how to find a horse's form. This one has done it before.
