Whether Kokanee simply loves it there remains to be seen — one win isn't a pattern — but it's a result the team at Ed Dunlop's Newmarket yard will have noted carefully.

Dunlop's operation is in decent health this season, having sent out 35 winners, so Kokanee is operating within a yard that clearly knows how to get horses to the track in winning form. The horse typically competes at Class 4 level, which sits in the middle of the racing pyramid — not the biggest stages, but competitive enough that winning isn't easy. At that level, Kokanee has won 1 from 6 races, a rate of about 1 in 6, which is actually the most encouraging number in its record.

The partnership with jockey Hector Crouch is one puzzle worth watching.
