The regular partnership is with jockey Sean Kirrane, who has been in the saddle for five of those six races without getting his nose in front. That kind of patience from a yard isn't unusual when a young horse is still developing, but it does mean there's real unfinished business here — a first win would feel earned when it comes.
What works in Kode Grey's favour is the stable behind it. Trainer Tim Easterby, operating out of Great Habton in North Yorkshire, has sent out 128 winners already this season. That is a serious volume of success — it means Easterby's yard knows how to get horses ready to win, and when horses from this operation start placing, they tend to find a way through eventually. Being trained by someone with that level of firepower is no small thing for a horse still waiting to get off the mark.
At three years old, Kode Grey has time on its side. Plenty of horses take half a season or more to figure things out, and that recent third suggests the penny may be starting to drop. The next run will be worth watching.
