Knightmare operates at Class 6, which is the entry-level tier of British racing, and has run there seven times without a win. That is not a damning verdict on the horse so much as an honest one — at this level, it is reliably placing, collecting minor prize money, and keeping the yard busy. But a horse that finishes second this often starts to raise a question every racing fan eventually asks: is it a problem of ability, or is there something — a longer trip, a different surface, a change of tactics — that might unlock a win?
The yard behind it is in decent form. David Evans, training out of Pandy in Monmouthshire, has sent out 37 winners already this season, which suggests a competent operation that knows how to place a horse. The fact that Knightmare raced just yesterday and is clearly being kept active shows the team believes there is a race to be won somewhere. With four runner-up finishes in six outings, they are not wrong to keep trying. The win, when it eventually comes, will have been a long time coming — and probably well deserved.
