The eight-year-old ran second on his only outing so far, which at least shows he can be competitive. A runner-up finish from a single race tells you very little about a horse's ceiling, but it tells you one important thing: he belongs on a racecourse. He raced just one day ago, so whatever comes next is not far away.
What does give genuine cause for optimism is who is training him. Henry De Bromhead operates out of Knockeen in County Waterford and has sent out 107 winners already this season — that is not a yard that wastes time on horses without potential. De Bromhead is one of the most respected trainers in the game, the kind of man who has handled horses at the very highest level. When a horse comes out of that operation, you take notice, even if the record so far is a modest zero from one.
Killaney King is essentially an unknown quantity with one encouraging data point and a trainer who knows exactly what he is doing. The story is still being written.
