What makes this an interesting situation rather than a simple write-off is the yard behind the horse. Mrs John Harrington trains out of Moone in Co Kildare, and her operation is one of the sharper ones in Irish racing right now — 52 winners already this season tells you this is not a stable that makes a habit of fielding no-hopers. When a team of that quality keeps running a horse, there is usually a reason, even if the results have not yet reflected it. Kevin The Great raced just yesterday, so clearly the yard have not given up on finding whatever it is they believe is there.
Whether that belief is well-founded remains to be seen. Eight races is a reasonable sample, and finishing sixth three times in the last four runs is not the profile of a horse on the verge of breaking through. Still, four years old is not old, and the Harrington yard clearly has faith. Racing has produced enough late bloomers to keep hope alive — but Kevin The Great has some serious catching up to do.
