That said, context matters here. Two races is a very small sample, and plenty of horses that go on to win have taken time to figure things out early in their careers. Racing just one day ago, Keep Grating is about as active as a horse can be, and there may well be more to come from it as it matures through the season.
What gives the situation some genuine interest is the yard behind it. Richard Hannon, based in Wiltshire, has sent out 118 winners already this season — a number that puts the operation firmly among the most productive in the country. When a trainer is firing in winners at that kind of rate, horses in the same string tend to benefit from good preparation and sharp timing. Keep Grating may not have broken through yet, but it is at least being looked after by people who clearly know how to get horses to the line in winning form.
