The recent form tells a slightly more encouraging story, at least in part. His last six races read 3-5-2-5-8 going back from his most recent run just yesterday, and that second place is the kind of effort that keeps a team hopeful. The eighth-place finish is less easy to explain away, but horses are not machines, and a bad day happens. What is notable is that he has been back out quickly and consistently — this is a yard that keeps its horses busy and seems to believe there is a race to be won somewhere in him.
Phillip Enright has ridden him in six of those races and is yet to ride him to victory, which means the partnership has now shared the full experience of what it feels like to be almost-but-not-quite together. That is not necessarily a criticism of either horse or jockey — sometimes a combination just needs the right conditions and the right day to click. Trainer Kevin Thomas Coleman, based in Carrick-on-Suir in County Tipperary, has sent out eight winners this season, which shows the yard is in decent form. The horses around Kasper Hauser are winning. The question is simply when it will be his turn.
At sixteen races and still searching, Kasper Hauser is the kind of horse racing is full of — talented enough to keep running, frustrating enough to keep you watching. Someone in that yard clearly believes the win is coming. They may well be right.
