The recent form makes for slightly frustrating reading. In the last six races, Karthala has finished fifth, missed a race, then fifth, fourth, seventh, and second — that runner-up spot the closest it has come to breaking through. Racing at Class 5, which represents the entry-level tier of the sport, means Karthala is already competing at the right level for a horse still searching for a first win. And yet, six races at that level without a victory is a puzzle the team at Basford will be keen to solve.
That team is trained by Jennie Candlish, whose yard in Staffordshire has been in fine form this season — 60 winners sent out is a healthy total that speaks to a stable operating with real confidence. Candlish clearly knows how to get horses winning, which gives some reason for optimism that Karthala's moment may still come. Having raced as recently as yesterday, this is a horse very much in the thick of its season, with plenty of opportunity still ahead.
