At seven years old, Justatan is no youngster still finding its feet. This is a horse that has had time to develop and has raced enough times to give a clear picture. That picture, for now, is of a horse operating comfortably in the midfield, occasionally threatening, but yet to convert a promising run into a winner's enclosure moment.
The one genuinely encouraging factor in all of this is who is doing the training. Emmet Mullins, based in Bagenalstown in County Carlow, has sent out 31 winners already this season — that is a yard in serious form. When a trainer is firing in winners at that kind of rate, it tends to mean the horses are fit, well-prepared, and running to a plan. The fact that Justatan raced just yesterday suggests the team is keeping the horse busy and looking for the right opportunity. Sometimes a horse just needs things to fall right — the right race, the right day — and being in a yard full of confidence is no bad place to be when that moment arrives.
For now, though, Justatan remains a horse in search of a first win.
