His recent form is mixed at best. Over his last six outings, most recent first, he has finished tenth, third, ninth, eighth, fourth, and first—a pattern that reads like a horse without a settled rhythm. The third place is encouraging enough, but the scattering of poor finishes either side of it shows the kind of inconsistency that makes trainers and owners reach for their heads in frustration.
Charlie Longsdon's Chipping Norton yard is having a strong season with 31 winners, so there is proper horsemanship here, but Jullou De Grissay has not yet proved he belongs in the higher company he occasionally contests. When stepped up to Class 4 races—one of the top levels of competition—he has failed to win in four attempts. His best partnership has been with Mr James King, who has ridden him five times and won once, a 20 per cent win rate that at least suggests the pair have some understanding. For now, though, this is a horse still searching for his level and another winning performance to build on.
