Donoghue was upbeat after Jr Mahon's debut at Leopardstown, noting that the penny only dropped inside the final furlong and a half — the tell-tale sign of a horse still learning the job. "He ran through the line really well," the trainer reflected, suggesting there is improvement to come as the horse matures and understands what is being asked of him. Rather than rush the horse back immediately, Donoghue bypassed a quick turnaround at Tipperary and instead mapped out a longer-term plan, eyeing a race at Navan a fortnight later. The trainer believes Jr Mahon will develop into a middle-distance horse of note, and has even drawn a comparison to Kinesiology, a previous inmate of the yard who made his mark last season.
With no wins from his last six races, Jr Mahon remains a work in progress, but his trainer's patience and the manner of his debut suggest there is a horse worth watching as he continues to mature. Donoghue's yard has already sent out 29 winners this season, so there is clear form on the board. For a four-year-old still learning his trade, the best may be yet to come.
