Over seven furlongs to a mile, he has won 2 of 7 races (29%), a number that might not sound spectacular but is meaningfully better than his overall record of winning roughly 1 in every 7 races across his career. Distance matters with this horse.

What really catches the eye is his record at Ayr. Two wins from just four visits there puts him among the most productive performers at the track relative to how often he has run. Courses suit horses for all sorts of reasons — the layout, the ground, the way a particular bend plays — and whatever it is about Ayr that agrees with Jonny Concrete, the numbers back it up. His regular jockey Andrew Mullen, who has ridden him in 17 of his 22 races and partnered him for all three career wins, knows this horse as well as anyone. Speaking recently, the trainer made clear this has been a deliberate build-up — keeping the horse fresh rather than running him into the ground — with Ayr's Bronze Cup firmly in the sights. "He could run a really big race," was the assessment, and given what this horse has done at that track before, it is hard to argue.

Jonny Concrete is not a horse who makes headlines. But he is exactly the kind of horse who turns up at a track where he has already won twice, fresh and ready, and causes a few people to wish they had been paying closer attention.
