What is worth noting is the yard behind him. Roger Fell, based in Nawton in North Yorkshire, has sent out 25 winners already this season — a meaningful tally that tells you this is not a stable that simply makes up the numbers. Fell knows how to get horses ready to win, which at least gives Johns Power a decent platform to develop from.
At two years old, there is obvious room for progress. Some horses take time to work out what racing is actually about, and three runs is a very small sample from which to draw firm conclusions. The direction of his finishes — fourth, then sixth, then tenth — is not an encouraging trend, but young horses can be unpredictable, and a change of conditions or a drop in the quality of the field could tell a very different story. For now, he remains a project rather than a performer.
