He raced just yesterday, so he is clearly an active, fit horse — but the results simply have not come.

What makes this story quietly interesting is the gap between expectation and reality. When E McNamara, based out of Rathkeale in Co. Limerick, took stock of Johnny M back in late 2022, the mood around the yard was genuinely optimistic. The trainer spoke warmly about him as a lovely young horse with real promise, someone they were very hopeful would develop into a decent performer. That kind of early enthusiasm from a trainer is not just PR — it usually reflects something they have seen on the gallops. The yard has been in fine form this season, sending out 22 winners, so it is not as though the operation lacks the ability to get horses winning.

And yet here Johnny M sits at 8 years old, still searching. That is the unpredictable nature of horse racing laid bare — a horse that looks the part at home, comes from a yard that clearly knows what it is doing, and still cannot find a way to win on a racecourse. Three places from 12 races tells you he is competitive enough to finish close, which makes the blank win column all the more frustrating. He is not being destroyed in these races — he is just not quite getting there. Whether that changes remains to be seen, but after 12 attempts, time is no longer entirely on his side.
