John Barleycorn

The one bright spot is that second-place finish, which at least shows John Barleycorn is capable of mixing it with the competition at Class 4 level — the kind of mid-tier races that make up the backbone of the British racing calendar. But with zero wins from four races at that level, the horse has yet to convert any of that potential into a result that matters. A win rate of zero from seven career races is a straightforward thing to say, and a difficult thing to dress up.

What keeps the picture from being entirely bleak is the trainer. Eve Johnson Houghton, operating out of Blewbury in Oxfordshire, has sent out 39 winners already this season — a yard clearly in good form and capable of getting horses to perform. Johnson Houghton is a trainer who knows how to place a horse to give it the best chance, so the fact that John Barleycorn hasn't found its way to the winner's enclosure yet isn't necessarily the final word. Sometimes a horse just needs the right conditions, the right race, and a bit of luck. Whether John Barleycorn can find all three remains the question.
