That is a horse who knows his level and performs at it reliably. His recent form tells the same story: in his last six races he has finished second, first, ninth, fourth, fifteenth, and third. One rough patch, but bookending it with a win and a near-miss suggests a horse in very good shape right now.

His partnership with jockey Shane Gray is one of the quietly compelling stories in northern racing. In 19 races together they have won 6 times — a win rate of 32%, or almost 1 in 3. That is a meaningful number. When a jockey wins nearly a third of his rides on a particular horse, it usually means they have found a rhythm together, an understanding of how the horse wants to be ridden and when to ask the question.

Trainer Sam England, based in Guiseley in West Yorkshire, has been the architect of all this. England's instinct is to keep him on the Flat for now, where he is clearly flourishing, while leaving the door open to hurdles later down the line. The plan, as England puts it, is simply to let the horse tell them when he needs a rest. Given what Jez Bomb has produced this season, that seems like the right approach entirely.
