His recent form tells the story of a horse treading water. In his last six races, he has finished out of the frame three times, hit the board with a second place and a fourth, and failed to mention with a seventh. He was back on the track just a day ago, which shows his trainer, Andrew Slattery at Thurles, is still finding races to suit him. Slattery's yard is in good form this season with 62 winners to their name, so there is plenty of horsepower in the operation — Jet Setting Jim just is not quite punching at that level.
When Michael O'Sullivan rides him, things improve slightly. The pair have partnered six times, winning once together, which works out to a 17 percent return — better than the horse's overall record, though still modest. That first win came at Clonmel in September 2023, early in what has been a long, lean stretch. The second and most recent victory at Listowel in June 2024 proved he could still get his head in front, but nothing since suggests he will do it again any time soon. At nine years old, with mounting losses and dwindling opportunities, Jet Setting Jim is a horse who will likely keep racing for a while yet, more out of habit than hope.
