Downpatrick is a tight, undulating track in County Down that rewards horses who handle an unusual layout, and Irish Lace handled it just fine. Whether that form will translate elsewhere remains to be seen, but as debut statements go, this one is hard to argue with.
The trainer behind the run is S R B Crawford, operating out of Larne in County Antrim. It is a yard that has been in good nick this season, sending out 12 winners already, so Irish Lace is not arriving from a cold stable. Crawford clearly has the strings working, which makes this debut win all the more credible — it is the kind of form that comes from a horse ready to run, not one simply being given a day out.
With only a single race to go on, there is not much of a story yet — but that is also what makes Irish Lace interesting. Every race from here adds a new chapter, and right now that chapter count starts at the best possible place: a win.
