Appleby's yard has been in fine form this season — 79 winners and counting — but Intervention holds a special place there. When he bought him, the horse had never won a race. Since then, he has won 11 races for the stable and earned well over £100,000 in prize-money. That transformation is the kind of thing trainers dine out on for years. Jockey Alistair Rawlinson has been the man most often in the saddle, winning 4 of the 23 times they have raced together — roughly 1 in every 6 rides, which is a strong return for a horse operating largely at Class 4 level, where he wins about 1 in every 10 races.
The most striking detail in Intervention's record is what he does at Lingfield Park. Four wins from 12 races there — one in every three — is exceptional. At most tracks, the average horse wins maybe one race in ten or fifteen attempts, so a one-in-three record at a specific course is the kind of stat that makes punters pay very close attention the moment his name appears in a Lingfield entry. He last won there in December 2025, five months ago, so a return is worth watching closely.
He also shows a sharp preference for fast, dry ground, winning 2 of just 6 races in those conditions — a 33% rate that leaps off the page compared to his overall 14% record, which works out at roughly 1 win in every 7 races. Appleby noted that Ripon suited him perfectly, and the yard had gone into that race quietly confident despite the competition — the thinking being that the three classier horses all had question marks against them, and if they came back to the field, Intervention would be there to take advantage. He was.
His recent form shows he has not won in his last six outings, and at nine he is not getting any younger. But this is a horse who has spent his entire career proving people wrong about what he can and cannot do. The season is young, Lingfield will come around again, and Appleby's yard is in full swing. It would be unwise to write him off just yet.
