At two years old, he is right at the start of his racing life, and a single fourth place tells us very little beyond the fact that he has had a taste of competition. Plenty of horses improve dramatically from their first run once they have learned what racing actually involves — the noise, the crowd, the starting stalls. Whether Influencer Man is one of them remains to be seen.
What does look promising is the operation behind him. Trainer Adrian Paul Keatley, based at Ryedale in North Yorkshire, has sent out 43 winners already this season, which is a yard clearly firing on all cylinders. When a trainer is winning at that kind of volume, it usually means the horses coming through the string are well-prepared and well-placed. A yard in that kind of form tends to know when a young horse is ready to take a step forward. The next run will tell us a lot more.
