Indalo

The most striking thing about Indalo is what he does at Newcastle. Two wins from three races there — a 67% win rate — is the kind of number that makes trainers circle a course on the calendar. Most horses are generalists; Indalo is something rarer, a horse that seems to genuinely click with a particular track. His very first career win came at Newcastle in November 2023, and he has kept going back and kept winning. Roger Varian noted early on that Indalo was laid-back by nature and took time to find his feet, but once he did, the improvement was clear. After a run at Newmarket where Indalo finished within inches of winning despite being squeezed for room, Varian described the way he burst through the pack as the work of a horse that, when everything falls right, has "a very big future." That kind of language from a trainer who sends out 86 winners in a season — Varian's yard is one of the most productive in Britain — is worth taking seriously.

He also shows a strong preference for normal ground conditions, winning 3 of his 4 races on a standard surface. That 75% win rate in those conditions is a real edge — it means when the ground is neither too wet nor too firm, Indalo is operating close to his ceiling.

The one caveat coming into his next race is the layoff. He has not raced for roughly six months, his last win coming at Southwell in late August. Returning from a break always brings questions, even for reliable horses. But with Varian's operation behind him and a course record at Newcastle that any trainer would envy, Indalo is the sort of horse you want to keep an eye on when he reappears. The talent is clearly there. The question is simply whether the time away has blunted the edge.
