Inca is trained by Clare Hobson at her yard in Royston, Hertfordshire, a small operation that has sent out three winners this season. That shows the team can get horses winning, which means the puzzle of Inca remains unsolved for now. He has run three times at Class 4 level — the kind of races designed for horses in the middle tier of the sport — without winning any of them, so there is no obvious sense that he is simply being asked to compete against horses too good for him.

What is notable is that Inca raced just yesterday, so the yard are clearly persevering and keeping him active. Sometimes a horse needs time, a different track, or a change in conditions to find its feet. But with five runs behind him and no reward to show for any of them, the honest assessment is that Inca has some serious work to do before he gives his trainer and supporters something to cheer about.
