That one career win came at Newcastle in December 2023, now more than 30 months ago, and the horse has not been back to the winner's enclosure since. The recent form — finishing sixth, seventh, third, fourth, third, and second across the last six races — tells a story of a horse that is competitive without quite being able to get its nose in front. The couple of placed efforts are encouraging, but the gap between second and first is the one that matters in racing, and Imperial Sovereign keeps finding itself on the wrong side of it.

Jockey Cam Hardie, who has partnered the horse more than anyone else, is yet to find the winning formula across their six rides together. That does not mean the partnership is wrong — they have produced some of those placed efforts — but the results column for the pair currently reads as a blank. Philip Kirby's yard at East Appleton in North Yorkshire is in decent form overall, having sent out 36 winners this season, so the infrastructure for a comeback is there. Imperial Sovereign raced just yesterday, which means it is firmly in active campaigning mode and another chance will likely come soon.

The honest verdict is that this is a horse punching at a high weight. Competing regularly at Class 2 level shows the team believes in its ability, and a win rate of 1 in 20 — just 5% — at that quality of competition is not a disgrace. But with 30 months since the last win, the question is whether Imperial Sovereign can rediscover that Newcastle feeling, or whether it is destined to keep finishing in the places without ever quite getting back to the front.
