Il Pirata

The long absence is the most interesting detail here. Eight months is a significant chunk of time, and horses do not simply disappear from racing for that long without a reason — whether that is a minor physical issue, a need to develop, or a deliberate decision to wait for the right opportunity. Whatever the reason, Il Pirata returns as something of an unknown quantity. The form from those three races has had plenty of time to become irrelevant.

Fowler's yard has sent out three winners this season, so there is clearly life and ability in the operation. Whether Il Pirata is ready to add to that tally on its return is the open question. So far, nothing in the record demands confidence — but horses that have been given time and space occasionally come back looking like a different animal entirely. This one will need to, given where it left off.
