Ice Max

K. R. Burke's yard at Coverham has a reputation for bringing horses on carefully, and Ice Max is a good example of that approach working. His recent form reads 1-1-3-6-4-2 (most recent first), which shows he has returned from the winter in sharp order. He has won 7 races from 21 overall, a one-in-three win rate that puts him among the better performers at his level. What makes his record even more impressive is that he has started to get competitive in top-class races: he has won two Class 1 races—the highest level in Britain—though his record in Class 1 company is still modest at 2 wins from 10 attempts.

Jockey Clifford Lee has ridden him five times and won three of those races, a 60 per cent win rate when they are together. The horse's trainer has indicated that Ice Max is a strong galloper who wants soft ground and a distance between seven furlongs and a mile, a sweet spot where he has won three of six races. After the Nottingham win, his rider spoke of a horse that had matured and grown into his frame, describing him as "definitely a Group horse"—racing terminology for one capable of competing at the highest levels. That kind of progress in a five-year-old, combined with recent back-to-back wins and a preference for the ground conditions we typically see in the British autumn and winter, makes Ice Max worth watching closely in the months ahead.
