Ibiza Lights

That runner-up finish stands out because everything else in the recent form looks quite ordinary. Finishing eighth or worse on four of the last six outings means Ibiza Lights has been well held more often than not, and a twelfth place in there suggests at least one race where things went badly wrong. At Class 5, which is the entry-level tier of British racing, the horse has raced three times without winning — and if a horse cannot win at this level, questions start to arise about where a victory might eventually come from.

The trainer is Michael Bell, a well-established Newmarket handler whose yard has sent out 44 winners already this season, so it is not as though Ibiza Lights is short of professional support. Bell knows how to place a horse and get the best from younger animals still learning their trade. A three-year-old with only six races is not a lost cause — some horses simply take time to mature and find their confidence — but with no wins on the board and form that dips more than it rises, Ibiza Lights will need to show something new quite soon to suggest the penny is about to drop. Raced just one day ago, there is at least no doubt the horse is fit and active. The next run will tell us a good deal.
