When Doughty is in the saddle, something clicks. Trainer Tony Carroll, based at Cropthorne in Worcestershire, has had an excellent season overall with 136 winners, so there is clearly quality in the yard.

The real question hanging over HK Fourteen is whether it can recapture the form that brought a win at Bath just over a year ago. The horse is still active and racing, but the long drought suggests it may have drifted down the pecking order or simply lost confidence. If Doughty gets the ride again at Newcastle, though, the odds might be worth a closer look.
