The recent form makes for tough reading. Looking at the last six races, the best result is a second-place finish, but that sits alongside finishes of ninth, thirteenth, eighth, tenth, and ninth — a sequence that suggests a horse who occasionally shows a flicker of promise but cannot sustain it when it matters. The thirteenth-place finish in particular points to at least one day when things went badly wrong. After that run of results, the horse has had a short break of around seven weeks, which at least gives the team something to work with — a reset, a chance to come back fresh.
Jockey N G McCullagh has been in the saddle for nine of those twelve races and is yet to find the winning formula, going 0 from 9 together. That kind of partnership, built up over time without a victory to show for it, says something about how consistently Highland Harvey has found ways to finish out of the frame. It is not a reflection on the rider — some horses simply do not make it easy for anyone.
Trainer Denis Quinn's yard is clearly capable of producing winners, so the talent is there in the operation. Whether Highland Harvey eventually rewards the faith being shown in it remains to be seen, but at four years old there is still time. The short break before its next run will be watched with interest — sometimes a little freshness is exactly what a horse needs to turn a corner.
