On paper, the breeding is interesting. His father, Starman, was one of the fastest horses in Britain at his best, a specialist over short distances who could burn through a race at a pace that left rivals looking flat-footed. His mother's side brings in Teofilo, a horse associated with stamina and class, the kind of influence that tends to add a bit of substance and intelligence to a young horse. Whether Herbert Hall has inherited the speed of his dad or the staying power of his mum's family — or ideally a bit of both — is exactly what today's race is designed to find out.
What we can say is that he is in good hands. Brian Meehan trains out of Manton in Wiltshire, a yard with serious history, and has sent out 13 winners already this season. That is a stable in form, which matters more than people sometimes realise — horses trained at a busy, confident yard tend to arrive at the track fit, well-prepared, and ready to run their best. A trainer on a roll backs himself, and that tends to show in how a horse performs on debut. Herbert Hall's first race tells us nothing yet, but it could end up telling us quite a lot.
