That single fifth-place finish tells us relatively little on its own — one race rarely does for a youngster — but what matters here is who is doing the training. John and Thady Gosden operate one of the most powerful yards in British racing, based out of Newmarket, and their numbers speak for themselves: 136 winners already this season. That is not a yard that sends horses out to make up the numbers. When a Gosden-trained two-year-old comes back after a considered break, it usually means the team has seen something worth waiting for.

Heraldry has everything still to prove, and at this stage of its career, that is entirely normal. The interesting question is what the next few months bring.
