Helvic Dream

Over longer trips — between a mile and six furlongs and two miles — Helvic Dream has won 2 from 8 races, a 25% win rate, or roughly 1 in every 4. That is a completely different animal to the one you see at shorter distances. It tells you something important: this horse needs time to warm up, needs room to build, and performs at its best when races are run at a genuine test of stamina. Push it too short and you're asking the wrong question.

Both of those wins came on Irish tracks — first at The Curragh in October 2023, then at Navan in February 2024, now more than two years ago. Since that Navan victory, Helvic Dream has gone 13 races without winning, and recent form makes for difficult reading: the last six runs show finishes of 17th, 11th, 11th, 14th, 7th, and 2nd. That second place is the one glimmer — there is still something there, occasionally. But finishing second once in six races, with four finishes outside the top ten, suggests a horse that is finding it harder and harder to compete.

The partnership with jockey Donagh Meyler has produced nothing yet — 0 wins from 7 races together — though that may say more about where the horse is in its career than about the rider. Trainer Noel Meade, based in Co Meath, is clearly a man in form with 38 winners sent out this season, so the expertise is not in question. Helvic Dream raced just yesterday, which confirms it is still an active runner. Whether another win is genuinely on the cards at this stage of its career is harder to say — but keep it at two miles, and at least the conversation stays interesting.
