The recent form makes for sobering reading, though. Looking at the last six races in reverse order, the numbers read 8, 10, 9, 3, 12, 6 — a third place sandwiched between a string of mid-field and rear finishes. That third suggests there are days when Hellcat clicks into gear, but they have been frustratingly rare. With no win from eight races and a win rate of zero percent, patience is being tested.
Hellcat is trained by Ross Burdon at Newmarket, one of the most competitive training centres in the country, where top yards line up next to each other and the standard is relentlessly high. Burdon's yard has sent out 12 winners this season, so the operation clearly knows how to get horses winning — the question is whether Hellcat can become one of them. Having raced just one day ago, the horse is clearly in an active campaign, and there will be more chances to come for a three-year-old still finding its feet.
