Hawkseye View

The answer, it turns out, is ground. Harrison describes him as very ground dependent—he needs the track to be fast and dry to show his best form. When those conditions came together at Newcastle last spring, Hawkseye View proved he could be clever and effective. The win itself was notable because the yard had been chasing it; after months of placing him in races where conditions or opposition proved just slightly too tough, getting him over the line felt like solving a puzzle rather than a surprise. At Class 5 level, his sphere of racing, he has won 1 out of 10 races there, which is respectable without being dominant.

What makes Hawkseye View difficult to fancy is that the ideal race rarely arrives. He is a decent jumper but doesn't have great scope, meaning he relies more on intelligence than athleticism. His regular jockey Peter Kavanagh, who has ridden him seven times, has never won aboard him—a mismatch that might simply reflect how hard it is to win with this horse rather than any fault on either side. Most recently, in his last six outings, he has managed a win and a fourth-place finish, with the rest producing nothing but the kind of blank races that frustrate both horse and trainer. For a horse at seven years old still searching for consistency, time may be running short.
