Hawk's Rock

The recent form makes for interesting reading. A second place is the standout, and there have been a couple of mid-pack finishes in the mix, but the sequence over the last six races — which includes a twelfth — suggests some inconsistency. Horses like this can be frustrating to follow, but they can also surprise you on the right day when everything clicks into place.

Hawk's Rock is trained by John Joseph Hanlon, who operates out of Bagenalstown in County Carlow. With 11 winners sent out already this season, Hanlon's yard is clearly in decent nick, and that matters. A horse in a functioning, confident stable has a better chance of improvement than one sitting in a yard that is struggling for form. The question is whether Hawk's Rock can be the one to reward the team's patience.

Having raced just yesterday, this is a horse very much in active campaigning mode. At six years old, it is not young — some horses find their best form around this age, others begin to drift. For Hawk's Rock, the clock is ticking slightly. No wins from seven races is a tough record to look past, but that placed form proves it is not simply making up the numbers. Finding the right opportunity, perhaps in a smaller or less competitive field, could finally be the thing that unlocks a first victory.
