His one bright moment came over a year and nearly two years ago at Huntingdon on 8 October 2024, when he finally broke through. Since then, it has been a long drought. Looking at his last six runs, the pattern is fairly typical for a horse of his ability: he ran sixth most recently, then fifth, eighth, third, and a first-place finish before that gap. His third-place run shows he can still place, but he is not putting together the kind of consistent form that would suggest a second win is imminent.

Where Harry Gulliver does find his level is in lower-class races. In Class 5 company — the bottom tier of British racing — he has won one from eight, which works out to around 12 per cent, roughly double his overall win rate. That suggests he belongs in those smaller fields and more modest contests. At this stage of his career, at age eight with just that single win to his name across 12 starts, he is exactly what he appears to be: a reliable, unspectacular horse who shows up, tries hard, and occasionally gets his head in front. Hales's yard has sent out 12 winners this season, but Harry Gulliver is not going to be one of their flagship names. Still, there is something honest about a horse that keeps racing without fuss.
