The recent form tells an interesting story. A ninth-place finish six races ago looked concerning, but Harpy Eagle bounced back with a second next time out — the closest it has come to winning — before fading to fifth, then fourth, then a difficult twelfth, and most recently sixth. That's a horse that runs in patches: glimpses of promise sandwiched between disappointing days. The second place, in particular, will have raised hopes in the yard at R P Cody's base in Dunnamaggin, Co Kilkenny, only for the follow-up runs to bring those hopes back down to earth.
Regular jockey Paddy Cody has been aboard for seven of those 11 races without a win between them, which is a tough partnership to persist with — though the yard clearly has faith in the combination. R P Cody's operation has sent out six winners this season, so the talent is there on the training side. Harpy Eagle, though, has yet to find its moment. It raced just one day ago, so whatever the next chapter holds, it is already being written.
