His recent form shows the struggle: a second-place finish, then four results further back (a sixth, a sixth, a twelfth, and a fourth), with that sole win wedged in among them. Paddy Cody, who rides him most often, has had seven rides on the horse without a win, which hints at the disconnect between what Harpy Eagle can do and what he actually delivers on race day. That kind of near-miss record — five places from 14 races, including that second just recently — suggests he is not entirely without ability. He shows up, he runs, sometimes he places. He just struggles to convert those efforts into wins.
R P Cody trains him from the yard at Dunnamaggin in County Kilkenny, which has sent out six winners this season. At least there is activity there, and Harpy Eagle is clearly being kept in work and given regular opportunities. That is what matters for a horse at this level — the chance to run, and the faith to keep running him even when success is rare. Whether he will find another win as quickly as he found his first, after so long waiting, remains to be seen.
