Happy Jacky

What stands out most is the partnership between Happy Jacky and jockey Peter Smithers. In eight races together, they have won four times — a win rate of 50 per cent — which is exceptional by any measure. That kind of success between horse and rider suggests a real understanding, the kind of connection that makes a difference when the gates open. Smithers has clearly figured out how to get the best from this horse, and every time they team up, you would have decent grounds for optimism.

Down Royal has been Happy Jacky's happy hunting ground. The horse has won two of its three races there, most recently on 29 August 2025. That was a year ago now, and the horse's form since has been less convincing. Over the last six races, Happy Jacky has picked up one fourth-place finish and one third, but no wins. Trainer Mark Fahey, who operates from Cloneygath in County Kildare, continues to campaign the horse actively — it raced just yesterday — and the yard itself is in good form this season with 24 winners to its name. At 12 years old, Happy Jacky is well-seasoned and still racing, which speaks to its durability and the confidence Fahey has in it. Whether the horse can rediscover that winning touch at Down Royal or elsewhere will be the story to watch.
