The fact that Hang On has gone 0 from 3 at that level means it has consistently been beaten by exactly the kind of horses it ought to be competitive with. That is the most honest way to put it.

What makes the situation a little more intriguing is who is doing the training. The yard of Joel Parkinson and Sue Smith, based up in High Eldwick in West Yorkshire, has sent out 43 winners already this season — that is a busy, functioning operation that clearly knows how to get horses winning. The fact that Hang On raced just yesterday and is still active suggests the team has not given up on finding the right opportunity. With a trainer pairing producing winners at that rate, perhaps the name is less a joke and more a genuine instruction.
